Can someone explain Alexa rankings?

I’m confused. This is not a new experience for me, but I’m seeking assistance anyway. According to Alexa, the internet traffic ranking for this blog has decreased slightly over the last several weeks. Given that I’ve been posting somewhat less frequently since the school year started, I really wasn’t terribly surprised by this. But, at the same time, I noticed that according to WordPress our page hits had increased significantly over the same period. So, curious I headed over to Quantcast to see what they had to say. And, their stats indicate that our site traffic, both in terms of visitors and page hits, has increased every month since April (with a slightly accelerated growth curve in September).

So, maybe you can understand my confusion. How can our site traffic be increasing according to WordPress and Quantcast, while at the same time our internet traffic ranking is decreasing according to Alexa? I don’t get it. If someone more knowledgeable than I could explain, I would greatly appreciate it.

  1. Is it not the case that Alexa is a relative ranking, so if other sites are growing faster you will still drop in the rankings even though you grow too? hits measures how many visits you get but alexa ranks you against other websites. as internet traffic increases constantly worldwide any website wishing to maintain its ranking would need to keep increasing at a similar rate. alexa also discriminates based on links and how many of your visitors have the alexa tool bar! So a few more variables to take into account!

    • I never did understand the theory of relativity.

Actually, that does make sense. I guess I figured that everyone else would just stand still and do nothing. You mean they were doing stuff too? Revolutionary!

  2. Not even Alexa can explain Alexa….
