The Calvin and Hobbes search engine

Here’s a great example of solutions for problems you didn’t know you had until you saw the solution. My whole family loves Calvin and Hobbes. Most of our books are so torn and tattered from too many nights spent lying under, on, or next to one of my daughters that they’re barely holding together. Sadly, this can make it difficult to find that perfect Calvin and Hobbes cartoon that I need to illustrate a point. (It doesn’t matter what point, there’s always a good Calvin and Hobbes cartoon for it.) But, now there’s an app for that. (Actually, it’s not an app; but saying “there’s a search engine for that” doesn’t sound as cool).

The Calvin and Hobbes search engine works pretty well. It’s fast and apparently searches quite a few of the strips. (I don’t know how comprehensive it is.) The search function is somewhat limited, though.

Currently the search only looks for EXACT phrases (not case sensitive), so if you’re looking for a comic with the words “balloon” and “airplane” you cannot enter them both, or it will search for “balloon airplane” together. Perhaps in the future I will fix this, but it’s actually a lot more difficult than leaving it as-is.

Otherwise, it’s a lot of fun. Be careful, though, you can waste a lot of time this way. I searched on “snowman” and immediately lost 15 minutes.
